CIAE Fruit Ripening Chamber
Most of the fruits like banana and mango are being ripened using calcium carbide at present, which is a banned chemical due to its harmful effect on consumers. A few large-scale ripening chambers (capacity: 10 tons or more) are available which are not accessible to small traders or farmers. The cost of these chambers is high. Hence it was thought of to develop small scale (capacity: around 1 ton) low-cost ripening chambers. A fruit ripening chamber with a volume of 15 m3 has been designed and developed which is made of made of pre-fabricated detachable panels. The panels consist of EPE foam sheet as an insulating material (low cost compared to commercially used PUF panels). The chamber is equipped with an air-conditioner, humidifier and ethylene generator to maintain the desired conditions required for scientific ripening of fruits like banana, mango & papaya. The chamber can accommodate around 1 ton of these fruits for ripening, which takes about 4-6 days. It can be dismantled easily and can be transported to different place/production catchment areas for use.
