ICAR-CIPHET Live Fish Carrier System
Background:
Traditionally the live fish is transported in mini trucks that are modified with polythene
lining for holding water. The live fish remain under stress in such carriers because of non
availability of aeration system and filtration system which results in low dissolved oxygen
concentration in water and high ammonia accumulation due to continuous discharge of
excreta by the fish. Consequently, the fishers have to face economic loss due to sudden high
mortality of fish which may go up to 100%. Further, due to faulty design, the carriers are
prone to accidents and overturns.
Technology Detail:
The Live Fish Carrier System having automatic aeration, filtration and the evaporative
cooling system ensure continuous availability of good quality water to the live fish
transported in the system proving healthy environment to fish and ensures animal welfare.
LFCS reduces the requirement of water to more than 50% as compared to the traditional
systems. LFCS requires only 1 (one) worker which is otherwise 4-5 workers in case of a
traditional system, thus reducing the cost of labour. The braking system of LFCS for the rear
wheels along with handbrake provides good stability to the vehicle. Compartmentalization
of water masses and/or the provision of water splash breaker in the vehicle reduces the
chances of accidental overturn of the carrier vehicle. Stackable Self-Aerating Containers
(SAC) are easy to handle and unloading of fish is handling stress-free because it does not
require holding fish with hand. Individual containers of SAC can carry different species and
sizes separately in the same vehicle. Being run by DC current LFCS is a complete
environment-friendly and zero polluting system. Eliminating the need of fueling, LFCS is
relatively economic for marginal farmers/ entrepreneurs because of less running cost. The
system is woman-friendly and can be operated by one or two women.
