Barley Variety KARAN MALTSONA (DWRB160)
Problem Description: There is an urgent requirement of high yielding malt barley varieties suitable for malting industries with disease resistance so that farmers can have remunerative barley crop. Usually higher yields result in deterioration of quality, however in this case reasonably good quality was preserved while maintaining the higher yield of grains. Solution Description: DWRB160 has very long spikes and bold grains therefore having high grain yield and reasonably good malting quality traits. DWRB160 will provide alternative and will also create varietal mosaic and will be additional option to the farmers and malt barley based industry to enable them to have a choice of variety. Presently areas in NWP zone are being targeted for Contract Farming by malt companies and there is a good scope of cultivation of new varieties under timely sown conditions. Recommended areas of cultivation include Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udaipur divisions), Western UP (except Jhansi division), parts of J&K (Jammu & Kathua districts), HP (Una district & Paonta valley) nd Uttarakhand (Tarai region)
