Bitter gourd: Pusa Hybrid-4
Background:
Generally bitter gourd crop is monoecious in nature which has female and male flower ratio is
around 1:9. It limits the yield of this crop. In addition this, the hybrid production by using hand
pollination is tedious and add to seed cost.
Technology Details:
Pusa Hybrid 4 was developed by using gynoecious line as one the parents; hence, it does not
require pinching (removal) of male flowers during hybrid seed production. It gives 15-20% higher
yield than the commercial monoecious based hybrids and thus helps in easy and economical
hybrid seed production. Synchronization of flowering is made by planting both male and female
flower in proper time. It has higher female:male flower ratio (2:1) compared to commercial
variety, Pusa Do Mausami (1:9).
