CIFRI Pen HDPE
Background:
Cessation of natural auto-stocking process, frequent floods, presence of predators and uncontrolled growth of aquatic plants are some of the major deterrents to fish production leading to poor productivity in open water fisheries resources such as lakes, lagoons, reservoirs and wetlands. Adoption of stocking enhancement technology for improving fish yield from these resources requires timely availability of fish seeds of appropriate size, numbers and species at regular interval. Large sized seed (advanced fingerling) in large quantity is a prerequisite for successful stocking enhancement programme. Split bamboo made fixed enclosure called pen was developed for in situ rearing of advanced fingerling as stocking material. Preparation and installation of such pen enclosures are found to be time consuming, labour intensive, less durable and difficult in handling. Such enclosures once installed are difficult to uninstall during off season.:
Technology Details:
Seed or table fish production in HDPE net pen found to be the most appropriate, simple and inexpensive technique for raising seed for stocking enhancement or table fish production in such ecosystems to help realize production potential and enhance fish production from these resources. The new pen design made up of HDPE net and FRP poles, replacing split bamboo pen wall and bamboo poles, found to be durable and very easy to prepare and handling operation. Pen fabrication using HDPE net material and FRP poles is a very simple process and fabricated pen can be transported to and from the installation site easily. The whole structure can be uninstalled and rolled into a bundle during off season for re-use in the following season. The HDPE pen structure is designed in such a way that it can be installed in deep water zones from a boat without dipping in water. Such pen can be of any design and shape and can be installed near or off the bank. However, the circular design of pen requires least fabrication material that optimizes capital cost. The new HDPE pen has been tested in multi-location trials and found most suitable in wetlands and small reservoir where water level fluctuation varies within a limited range. The materials used in the pen structure are HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) nets, FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) poles and HDPE ropes and threads.
