CTCRI Bioformualtions with pesticidal action
1. CTCRI Bioformulation – 01 (Arbitrary name: Menma):
It is a cassava based bioformulation for the management of borer pests in banana, and stem borers of fruit crops like mango, cashew and other specific crops.
Background:
Pseudo stem weevil (Odoiporus longicollis Oliver) is the major borer pest of all varieties of banana, causing yield loss up to 90%. Farmers use very toxic synthetic insecticides for spray or pseudo stem injection, despite there is no satisfactory control.
Technology Description:
The insecticidal principles isolated from cassava leaves were standardized for stem injection for the management of borer insect pests of Banana and coconut.
2. CTCRI Bioformulation – 02 (Arbitrary name: Nanma): It is a bioformulation for the management of sucking insect pests like aphids, thrips, scale insect, mealy bugs and early instars of tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura) of agricultural crops.
Background:
Globally there is a drive to shift from synthetic insecticides to eco-friendly formulations in pest management strategies. Sucking pests like aphids, thrips, scale insect, mealy bugs etc. are the chief destroyers of crops in India that culminating an increase in the use of pesticides. It triggers high levels of pesticide pollution.
Technology Description:
The formulations were made with a unique combination of bioactive principles isolated from cassava, neem oil and surfactant. Standardized its concentration and dose against pseudostem weevil (Odoiporus longicollis Oliver) in banana as prophylactic measure and also against the aforesaid sucking pests.
3. CTCRI Bioformulation-03 (Arbitrary name: Shreya): A cassava based bioformulation for the management of mealybugs in various crops, stored tubers of yams and elephant foot yams.
Background:
Mealybugs and scale insects are the important pests of agricultural crops. The white waxy coating
called mealy substance covers its full body and protects the pest from the penetration of insecticides. Infestation causes heavy losses to the crops.
Technology Description:
Chemistry and ultrastructure of the mealy substance were studied and a formulation arbitrarily named Shreya was developed to dissolve the mealy substance of mealy bug. Application of the bioformulation dissolve the mealy coating, and subsequently kills the pest.
