DRR Dhan 50
Background:
Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204) is the landmark rice variety developed at Bapatla, Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) way back in 1980’s. It is quite popular among farmers and is widely grown across the southern and eastern parts of the country. It is greatly preferred by consumers across the country due to its super fine medium slender grain type and desirable eating and cooking qualities. However, it has poor seedling survival under flooded situations and grain yield is severely reduced with the onset of drought stress during reproductive stage leading to economic loss to the farmers:
Technology Details:
DRR Dhan 50 is a seedling stage submergence tolerant and reproductive stage drought tolerant variety developed in the background of Samba Mahsuri deploying marker assisted selection (MAS). It is developed at ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research (ICAR-IIRR), Hyderabad with introgression of sub 1 for submergence tolerance and qDTY2.1+qDTY3.1 for drought tolerance. The agro-morphological, grain and cooking quality characters of DRR Dhan 50 are at par with the existing genotype Samba Mahsuri. It is suitable for cultivation in drought and flood prone areas of the country ensuring assured income to the farmers.
