Background:
Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204) developed by ANGRAU during 1980s, is a highly popular rice variety among the farmers in South India and some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The variety has medium slender grain and excellent cooking qualities. It is a highly preferred rice variety among the farmers and consumers. However, the variety is extremely susceptible to bacterial blight of rice (a devastating rice disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae) and also susceptible to salinity causing significant yield loss:
