Background:
Akshayadhan was developed by Indian institute of rice research, Rajendra nagar Hyderabad. Akshayadhan is a high yielding medium duration variety (135 days), whose yield is significantly limited by bacterial blight disease. The variety is a long-bold grain type and it is one of the popular varieties in South India, particularly in the State of Karnataka. It has good cooking and eating qualities it is a highly preferred rice variety among the farmers and consumers. However, the variety is extremely susceptible to bacterial blight of rice (a devastating rice disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae):

DRR Dhan 59 [RP-5989-47-15-11-1-126-2-13-11 (IET 27280)] is a MAS derived, bacterial blight resistant high-yielding, long-bold grain type rice variety in the genetic background of Akshayadhan (having the wild rice derived, major bacterial blight resistance gene, Xa33), with seed to seed maturity of 125-130 days and average yield of 5.50 t/ ha.The variety, DRR Dhan 59 (IET 27280)] exhibited highly resistant reaction with an SI of 4.0 (2018) and 4.8 (2020) as compared to the recurrent parent, Akshayadhan.DRR Dhan 59 (IET 27280)] possesses long-bold grain type with very good HRR (56.2%), amylose content (26.57), optimum GC (44) and intermediate ASV (4.0) and is comparable to the recurrent parent, Akshayadhan in all the grain and cooking quality parameters.
