IVRI - Anti Diarrheal Herbal Formulation
Background:
Diarrhea in animals, especially in the newborn calf, is a major problem resulting in great economic loss to the livestock industry. Besides the specific oral antimicrobial therapy, correction of the associated fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances by the use of supportive therapies are the most needed life-saving measures. Indigenous herbal preparations to treat diarrhea are an age-old practice. It can be an appropriate sustainable eco eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to limit the sole dependency on chemical agents.:
Technology Details:
An ideal polyherbal anti-diarrheal formulation has been developed to control calf diarrhoea by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (ICAR) maintaining GLP and GMP using locally available plant materials. The uniqueness of the newly developed herbal formulation was to bring the faecal consistency to normal by day 3 of treatment along with marked improvement in dehydration and depression scores. It has profound economic significance to organized and unorganized herds. The formulation developed by IVRI would be cheaper than the equivalent herbal formulation produced outside India if any. Extensive on-field therapy in various agro-climatic zones has been done denoting better effects even than modern medicine.
