KMJ-1 (Popping - Rabi Sorghum variety)
Background:
The traditional practice of consumption sorghum pops is disappearing and needs upscaling to
improve economical and health conditions of people. Ready to consume foods from sorghum
are very few and ready to eat foods like pops are maize based. To make sorghum viable in the
food sector, special grain type varieties with grain texture suitable for food processing can
directly be made into use for commercialization. Hence, the variety that gets premium price for
pops as well as matured grains for its consumption throughout the year is desired. As pops are
rich in dietary fiber and less in fat, serves an excellent food for persons suffering from
constipation, diabetics, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Pops are believed to be right food
for convalescents and the aged. Thus, genotypes suitable for pops will provide health benefits
to the consumers.
Technology Details:
The variety, KMJ-1, a popping variety is developed from pure line selection from Kagi Moti Jola,
a landrace identified for popping purpose. Good popping yield and pop expansion ratio, pops
are white, medium sized with good flavor and grain nutritional composition (especially
micronutrients). Due to its high yield and better-quality popped grains, the variety is suitable for
commercial exploitation. Grains small, elliptical recorded better micronutrients content (Fe and
Zn) compared to M 35-1. The matured grains can be utilized for grain flour based crunchy snacks
like sev, nippat, namkeen, chakkali, etc. and for Semolna, which can be used for preparation of
traditional dishes like upama, nucchu, bana, kichadi etc. variety of tasty food items.
