Background:
The perishable nature of tropical tuber crops and the difficulties in long-distance transport, storage and marketing constitute major problems for farmers. In India, there are about 1000 small, medium and large-scale factories involved in the extraction of starch and they use commercially available high capacity machines for starch extraction. The starch price is determined by industries and the farmers are at the receiving end and get a very low share of the consumers’ price.

Technology Details:
In order to overcome this problem, in situ production of starch and value addition near the farm site is recommended. The produce will also ensure the promotion of cottage and small-scale industries besides ensuring food security by incorporating starch to a certain extent in various food preparations.
