Background:
Onion is one of the most important vegetable having year round demand. Besides, a significant
quantity of fresh onion is also exported every year. The low production problem (average
productivity is 17.0 t/ha) is associated with lower income of the farmers. Therefore, improving
yield by means of high yielding variety is required. There is a growing trend of intake of natural
functional food among masses. Onion is regarded as important functional food and improving
quality parameters along with yield will improve its functional food value. Dark red onion is
preferred in domestic as well as export market. Therefore development of high yielding dark red
onion variety is needed to boost onion production and farm income.

performance for various quality parameters revealed superiority of Pusa Riddhi over other
varieties. The bulbs are attractive dark red in color, therefore, suitable for major export markets
of Indian onion.
