Onion Variety Pusa Shobha
Background:
Onion is used every day in almost every house hold and therefore, have constant round the
year demand. In India, it is grown in area of 1.32 million ha but the present productivity is low
(17.0 t/ha). Along with low yield, our varieties have low Total soluble solids content (11-12
°Brix) and not suitable for processing. Majority of our varieties are red colored and not
suitable for export to USA, Australia.
Technology Details:
Pusa Shobha addresses the low production issue of the genotypes grown by the farmer. The
average yield is 25.04 t/ha which is 47.29% higher than present national productivity of onion.
The flesh is white with high TSS (17± 20 Brix) and suitable for processing and value addition
purpose. The skin color is brown, therefore, suitable for export to USA and European countries.
