Background:
Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen in symbiotic association with rhizobia. The amount of nitrogen fixed depends on the efficacy of the rhizobial strains. Most of the native population of rhizobia in soils are ineffective and does not contribute much to nitrogen. In order to have effective symbiotic potential, it is required to identify efficient and competitive strains of rhizobia and use it for inoculation. Rhizobia are very specific to the host plant and for each legume different type of rhizobia are required. Technology Details:
The formulation contains effective strain of rhizobia which contributes about 30 kg N ha-1. The application of this formulation can reduce the application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer. Its inoculation is more beneficial for crops like soybean and French bean where native population is absent in Indian soils. Efficient strain for chickpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, urdbean, groundnut, pea and lentil are available.
