SPV-2217 (Rabi Sorghum variety)
Background:
Rabi sorghum is important staple food in Northern Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. M-35-1 is the major variety being grown which is having best Roti
quality. However, this variety is having limited yield potential and susceptible to charcoal rot
disease. There is a need to develop high yielding variety with tolerance to charcoal rot and
quality comparable to M-35-1.:
Technology Details:
The pedigree breeding by involving Gundu Jola a traditional land race with good Roti quality and
fodder quality and another line from ICRISAT, IS-29404 with high yield potential was initiated
and evolved the superior segregant which combines good grain and fodder quality along with
higher yield potentiality and released as SPV-2217 in Karnataka state after detailed evaluation.
