Plant tissue culture techniques have gained momentum throughout the country in biotechnology sector for commercial production of disease-free and genetically uniform planting material. However, it has been seen as expensive system due to lack of technical and instrumental advancements. Hence, it is essential to develop a cost-effective practice. ICAR-NRCB has designed and invented a novel semi-automatic bioreactor system called somatic embryo regeneration vessel (SERV), for somatic embryogenesis and shoot tip multiplication. This invention is highly suitable for commercial production of quality planting material in commercial crops. This SERV system replaces expensive chemical, glass wares and reduces manpower requirements with the potential production capacity to fulfill country’s requirement of quality planting material and it has been considered as next generation plant tissue culture equipment.
