Tropical carrot F1 hybrid: Pusa Vasuda
Background:
Hybrid seed production in carrot by using hand emasculation and hand pollination is practically
impossible because of compound umbel, flowering behavior and very small flowers. Hence,
alternate genetic mechanism like CMS is used which can be commercially exploited for easy and
economic hybrid seed production.
Technology Details:
Pusa Vasuda was developed by using petaloid CMS line as one of the parents; hence it does not
require hand emasculation in female line during seed production, thus helps in easy and
economical hybrid seed production. Synchronization of flowering is made by planting both male
and female flower in proper time.
