Background:
Generally, durum wheat is grown in MP, Karnataka and Maharashtra for pasta, macaroni and noodle preparation. The durum wheat fetches premier price of this region. Hence, there was high demand for hard wheat which is high yielding and disease resistance. This necessity was felt and keeping the interest of both consumers and farmers, improvement of durum wheat was considered.
Technology Details:
Strong durum wheat breeding programme was continued to develop high yielding varieties. UAS 428 was developed and released for cultivation under timely sown irrigated condition. It is a high yielding variety and exhibits high resistance to leaf and stem rust, and other minor diseases. The seeds of this variety are hard and possess good quality parameters. This is the best suitable variety for suji preparation.
